Treadmills, Shoes, ....and an Ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound today. Wait WAIT! It was on my feet :) Ha ha, let me explain.

About 3 weeks ago I had a guy around 25-ish get on the treadmill next to me and run for a mile then he got off. I thought it was a little strange but he came back after 25 minutes to run more.
I really dislike treadmills because I can't help but watch the numbers in front of me, it keeps me from enjoying the run. I always cover the numbers with my jacket and when I have a mile left, I usually take my jacket off of the numbers to see where I am at. Right when I was about to leave he stopped me and starting asking about my running schedule/history. He was apart of a BYU study where they are testing Vibram Shoes and how they change your running.

They said if I did the study I would get a free pair of vibram shoes. Psh why not! The qualifications are to run 15-30 miles a week over the next 10 weeks and to follow the running schedule. I am doing that as it is and so I will be just logging my runs for their schedule.
There are 2 groups, the Vibram Group and the Control Group. I was randomly selected for the Vibram study and I will slowly be incorporating the vibram shoes into my runs. Starting with 1 a week. SLOWLY being the key word.
While I was waiting for my MRI on Saturday, after I had been selected to be in the Vibram group, there was a man just finishing up his MRI leaving the exam room. He was on Crutches! I sympathetically asked, "What happened!" He said with a smile, "I broke a metatarsal." I responded, "Yes, but how?" Then he looked at me and smiled hesitantly, "Just running." I looked over at the man helping with the study with, I'm sure, a look a fear.
I immediately explained that I can't break my foot. I have a marathon to run in 2 months!! The study organizer went on to explain and reassure me that the injury was caused by using the vibram shoes on long runs too soon. The schedule used to say, run 1 short run this week in the vibram shoes. They are no including, short run = 2 miles. He explained that the marathoners count a 8-4 mile run as short run. The poor guy was supposed to run the UV Marathon too.
Anyway, today I went to BYU and they took an ultrasound with the cold gel and took a bunch a pictures of the muscles in my foot. Then they had me do running bear foot, with shoes, and in the vibrams while I hooked up to monitors.

It is really interesting to watch how everything is done. I think I will have Joseph come and take pictures when they test me again for the results in 10 weeks. For now my focus is Boston!

  1. That is so neat! I remember seeing those shoes for the first time, they are so weird, but look pretty comfy. I hope everything goes well! I'm excited to hear if you like them?!

  3. That is so cool! I watched a documentary (nerd alert) on a group of people they took from sedentary to marathon in 6 months. I loved watching all the tests they did. And I wanna hear how you like the new shoes! I am so skeptical of them, so let me know. Happy running!

  4. How neat! You'll have to tell us what you think of the shoes. I can't believe a guy broke his foot just running with them. So much for the theory that we're meant to run barefoot...Yay!! for Boston and good luck!

  5. Cool... All familiar looking pics to me :) Yeah, gotta be careful with the Vibrums. SLOWLY... they are not meant to be sprinting shoes. Have you read Born to Run Yet?

Oh and Congrats on being preggers ;) HA!
